South Korean University Creates Minecraft Metaverse, And Holds Entrance Ceremony

Minecraft is an online game with endless potential that is constantly being displayed in new and exciting ways. Many important activities in person were halted due to the chaos of the world. But one college decided they would head to a Minecraft metaverse to combat this.

Reddit user shared a clip of a Minecraft-based entry ceremony at Yeungnam University in South Korea. This creative effort by Yeungnam University allowed for students to celebrate their beginning of their college lives through the virtual Minecraft space that was designed to represent the campus they'll be spending the next few years of their lives at.

The video showcasing the event features an auditorium full of students with unique Minecraft skins, speakers from the staff on stage, a full-scale campus to explore, fun games for participants, and spectacular fireworks to mark this day of celebration.

Yeungnam University discusses the "metaverse University" and the students who helped create it. The students who created this project are members of the Yeungnam University Minecraft Server Club (YUMC). Although it was only established in February, the group already has over 300 members. Students majoring in many different fields came together within the club to create their campus in Minecraft.

Seo Seung-wan, president YUMC, said he was sorry for the loss of communication and interaction in school due to COVID-19 prolongation.  ARTTALK "I organized this club thinking that it would be great to create a student-led group to participate in interactive activities in the virtual world of Minecraft."

The members of YUMC collaborated to build the virtual campus and even put little details in the model that only students from the university would notice, like their favorite dining establishments on campus. They designed all the most important places on their campus, including the Central Library and the Chunma Art Center.

The Minecraft metaverse version of their campus has proven useful for Yeungnam University and has continuously been used for other important occasions, including meetings and military send-off ceremonies.

Lee Bo-gyeong, a student at Yeungnam University, stated that the new '21 freshmen admissions ceremony was held in the metaverse in March. "We wanted to have an admissions ceremony that was planned by freshmen's seniors who could not have a proper admissions ceremony due to COVID-19.
